Jessica Rust is many things- dear friends, super talented artist and sharp business lady. Jess and I have known each other since our single-in-NYC days. We met when I was doing steel furniture and she was making awesome handmade porcelain sinks and showing at the ICFF at the Javitz Center. She ended up hiring me to do some textile design with her in her Brooklyn studio and through sitting and schmoozing and painting side by side we became good friends. I got to know her fat cats, new puppy, and roommate turned boyfriend turned husband (some girls have all the luck- he was right there in her living room!)
Since then we have both lived all over the place. I moved first to Jerusalem, then Tel Aviv, then Tuscon (!), she got married and moved to San Francisco, where she convinced me to move as well. I lasted about a year there and moved down to LA, while she started her family, moved to Minnesota (very, very cold she tells me), then Paris (way to upgrade, Jess! No offense, Minnesota…) then somehow she and her family landed here in LA- hooray! Granted, they live near the beach while we live waaaay across town against the mountains, but we’ve managed to hang out now and then.
I am lucky enough to be able to sell some of Jessica’s amazing personalized ceramics here on the site, and we’ve talked about doing projects together again. So I was thrilled when she asked me to sketch some cats and dogs for her new line of pet dishes! It’s so fun to see the finished product, all shiny with those awesome gold accents! I don’t have pets, but I wonder if it would send a weird message to put Mena’s snacks in one?
